Countdown Begins Until Start of Arnette Pro Junior
NEWPORT BEACH, California (Monday, June 2, 2008) – The inaugural Arnette Pro Junior presented by Jack’s Surfboards is just five days away and the recommencement of the 2008 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Pro Junior Series will see the region’s top junior competitors descend upon the high-performance banks of Newport Beach’s 56th Street from June 7-8, 2008.
Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL) has been on a roll this season, collecting a Quarterfinals, a runner-up and a 3rd place finish so far this season, putting him in the ratings lead on the 2008 ASP North America Pro Junior Series.

“My first goal is to have fun and I am doing that so I am psyched at the moment,” Beckmann said. “But as for my surfing goals, I really want to win the ASP North America Pro Junior Series so I can finish my last year as a junior with a bang. So with that being said, I also really want to make it to OZ (for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships). I came really close last year and I am looking forward to being there this year.”
This weekend’s event will be Arnette’s first venture into the ASP-sanctioned realm, and the partnership offers the North American juniors another opportunity to earn points towards qualification for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championship.
“We couldn’t be happier teaming up with ASG, ASP and Jack’s on the inaugural Arnette Pro Junior,” Joe Freitag, Arnette Brand Manager, said. “We’re stoked to support professional surfing and provide junior competitors with another opportunity to earn points on the ASP North American Tour. This is a key event for Arnette, and with so many solid athletes bringing their A-game, it’s definitely going to be a fun contest.”
The ASP North America region qualifies the top 4 finishers of the season as well as the highest finishing North American surfer on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) who is of junior age for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, held in Narrabeen, Australia each January.
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships crown the undisputed ASP World Junior Champions, awarding them preferred seeding on the ASP WQS that season. The prestigious event has crowned past champions such as Andy Irons (Hanalei, HI), Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta, AUS), Jordy Smith (Durban, ZAF), Jessi Miley-Dyer (Bronte, AUS), Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, AUS), among others.
The ASP Grade-2 Arnette Pro Junior will now play an important role in determining this season’s ASP North America Pro Junior Qualifiers.
WaveWatch, official forecasters of the ASP Grade-2 Arnette Pro Junior, are calling for a playful mix of Northwest and Southwest swell to be gracing the competition site at Newport Beach’s 56th Street, offering the legion of junior talents on hand the ideal canvas to exhibit their collective abilities.
Action kicks off June 7, 2008 and will be webcast LIVE via www.arnetteprojr.com
