The Break:
From the Hottest 100 Yard days of the late ’70s to the ’80s’ Echo Beach revolution, the famed 56th Street zone has long been a hotbed for California performers. A series of short jetties armor the coast from erosion, and also happen to make some of the best sandbars south of Point Conception. From racy tube sections to workable corners, when it’s on, Newport turns into a surfer’s playground.

The Swell:
A nice hurricane swell lights up the jetties like a Christmas tree, but on any solid south, Newport transforms into a virtual skatepark. Throw some west swell in the mix to cross things up and it’s A-frame aplenty.

The Lowdown:
The Pro Junior season rages on this summer at 56th Street in Newport Beach with the 3rd annual Arnette Pro Junior. And if there’s a better place to celebrate the conclusion of  the end of another school year, we can’t imagine where it would be. With Southern Hemi lines lighting up the jetties like cherry bombs in a boy’s room toilet, the Pacific warming up to a trunkable temperature, and enough bikinis on the beach to drive even the most mature under-20 surfer mad, what could be better? Throw into the mix a long-standing tradition of high-performance surfing, and Newport is one hell of a spot to shake your tail feathers.   Last year saw Nat Young take first, while Keanu Asing and Cory Arrambide took second and third respectively.  Look for Nat to defend his title while battling against a whole host of frothing juniors ready to take out the rest of the competition.
